Torres will be in blue next week
Before Fernando Torres joined Liverpool, he apparently supported them growing as a boy and when he signed, it was a dream move. I know, it's too good to be true and it turns out he got his colours mixed up, it was really Chelsea. Loyalty it appears, costs £200k a week these days.
The talk is Torres is on £120k a week at Liverpool; over £6,000,000 a year and he can probably pick that up for the next five seasons. Add that all together with his endorsements and investments, he isn't going to retire a pauper and chances are he could retire tomorrow and he and his family, for generations, would never have to really work again.
But now Chelsea is his club. He has handed in a transfer request and I fancy he will be kissing their badge by next Monday. He'll do it without a thought for Liverpool or their supporters. He'll do it and not care. He'll do it and not care because that is what we, as supporters not capable of having a unique thought unless we hear on on Sky first, created.
As football fans, we've allowed this to happen and it is wrong. But none of us will do anything to try and change it.
But Torres will do well at Chelsea - he might even fire them up the table and he will certainly help them score more goals, but should it be allowed that we pay these players this much and more importantly, if a player signs a contract shouldn't he be forced to play that contract out?
If I was a Liverpool fan, I'd be gutted now, but not surprised. Liverpool are a great club in decline. They're not like Leeds, but they are further away from a top four spot because Torres wants to leave.
They don't have to sell him, but if they don't they have a player at the club that doesn't want to be their and regardless of the statements made if he isn't sold, he isn't going to give 100% and he wouldn't have been convinced by the owners that they were serious about making Liverpool contenders again.
Liverpool are not going to be contenders again, because they now have an owner that has no interest in them. The only interest the Liverpool owners now have is a return on their investment and as that will be top of the list, they'll not take the risks necessary and when your top player wants to leave - it sends out a message.
I don't feel sorry for Liverpool FC or their supporters as they've got a new striker that could do very well. You see, we all know that most players that you bring to your club have no connection and they'll jump ship as soon as their head is turned with the prospect of more money. But I do feel sorry for myself and the game.
The game is broken but I'm not walking away from it, I am however reluctant to throw any more of my money at it until it is fixed.
